“To me, the future just meant more disappointment. Trauma from my past was my excuse to stay closed off from everyone. Then I met Winnie. The shelter said she’d never be adopted. They said years of physical and mental abuse prevented her from being ‘normal.’ I took her home. Maybe I saw myself in this dog. It took a while, but Winnie finally opened up, became happy, and fearless. She didn’t hold any grudges against humans. She explored her new world and played with her new dog friends. She didn’t dwell on the past. I figured that I shouldn’t either. Sometimes our best teachers come with four paws and a tail.”
